| Unsentimental. I focus on the kinds of craft issues that will keep a writer from being taken seriously and prevent them from fully expressing their vision.
For more information, see "Writing Hurts: Review Forum" |
My review style is simple- I like to keep it short and sweet. I tend to use something I learned in college, which is called the "sandwich technique". I will tell you something positive, then include any constructive comments that I feel may be of use to you, then end with another positive.
My opinion will rely heavily on content, character and story arc, and reflect anything that catches my eye...purely from a readers standpoint.
I will be honest: I just want GP. However, when I get paid to do something, it is a job, and I don't mess around with jobs. Do note that my spelling is sloppy. I would really take any GP above 100 but WdC doesn't let me.
I look at the title, premise, overall structure first. Then I see how it makes me feel. After that, I might comment on little errors which are easily fixed.
Minimalist. Focus on technical. I also look at how a work would fit into the traditional publishing landscape. I don't use a template. Warning: I am Australian, and so cultural differences may apply.
I have a review template that is only used for in depth reviews, usually those that are specifically requested. These will be as comprehensive as I can manage, including everything I have noticed in reading the piece. Most of my reviews, however, are more in the nature of reactions to the piece with brief notes on things I find particularly good and suggestions on dealing with any obvious flaws in the writing.
I'm honest and supportive, but I will give advice about things I THINK would help beef up your writing (up to my standards, which aren't very high).
Is honest, encouraging, motivating and helpful with revisions.
I am thorough. The technical aspects are important to me as much as if the story makes sense. The word "cruel" has been used before when responding to a review I've given, but in an appreciative and kind way.
The purpose of my reviews is to give honest, unbiased feedback in hopes that you can take something away from it that will improve your writing. As such, they will be brutally honest, but I'm just as honest and forth giving with positive feedback and praise! I don't sugarcoat, but I'm not unkind. However, if you're here to have someone tell you that it's great and nice without giving you any actual criticisms, this isn't where you want to be. Constructive Criticism is the name of the game! Note: I don't just review, I will edit and/or provide suggestions as well upon request (or if you don't specify that you don't want edits).
| I like to always pick out the positive points in a piece, even if overall I am not enamoured by it.
I tend to point out grammatical and spelling errors.
I will be honest, but not unkind |
I attempt a well-rounded review where I look at the item from a writer's and reader's perspective. I'll tell you what I liked and what I think could be strengthened. I like to think I'm a courteous and helpful reviewer.
Brutally honest, but fair. I will give my impressions of the main points: Plot, character, setting, dialog. Then I will get into grammar, spelling, and typos. I will tell you what works, and what doesn't. As far as the star ratings go, I don't rely on them too much, but use them as a measure of an item's relative merit. Take it for what it's worth. Bottom line, my goal is to help the author improve their work.
As a reviewer of your work, I will first look for identification in what you are presenting. When a reader can truly identify with the writer, emotion sets in and the story becomes a part of the reader as well as the writer.
I'll give a quick summary of your item. Afterwards, I'll talk about your characters, any Spelling or Grammar issues, and perhaps suggest some things, like adding the item to a Genre that it would fit into.
I focus on plot and characters. Stories I really get into I break down looking at grammar and spelling. I am honest to the core of my reviews and I like to extend as much grace as I can to new writers (cause we've all been there). As far as star ratings go:*Five stars means I think you can publish it.*Four and a half stars means I think just a few changes need to be made (mostly spelling and grammar).*Four stars mean there is something either in the plot, or characters, that aren't working.*Three and a half stars means it's above average for a WDC item, which means revise it once and then call me.*Three stars mean it's an average WDC item, which means revise it once, or twice, and then call me.*Two and a half stars means it's below average for a WDC item, which means something major to the story isn't working.*Two stars means most everything has gone wrong.*One and a half stars means that the only redeeming factor is the premise.*One star means WTF!
When providing reviews, I tend to maintain a positive outlook. While some things may not work in a story or other writing sample, I feel it is important to identify what works well and how parts done poorly can be reworked into something better.
Read for overall flow and proper language usage, proper grammar...etc.
